Early detection saves lives

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer for Australian men. This year it is estimated there will be 26,000 new cases diagnosed, and about 3,900 deaths (more than 10 each day, and 25% higher than those from breast cancer).

The primary test for prostate cancer is a simple blood test for prostate-specific antigen which can be an indicator of prostate cancer. Early detection saves lives and late detection can be fatal. At this time, advanced cancer can be treated but not cured. Men are not testing or not testing early enough. This has been caused by lack of awareness and education, and inadequate screening guidelines. The guidelines are under review.

2025 draft guidelines are summarized as follows:

  • For men over 40, a PSA test should be offered to interested men, and testing every 2 years should be offered to men at higher risk.
  • For men 50-69, PSA testing should be offered every 2 years.
  • For men 70 and over, PSA testing is recommended based on clinical assessment and life expectancy.

Funds are needed for awareness, education, research and support. Awareness and education will encourage vital early testing. Research unlocks the future for new early detection programs. Research unlocks the future for men with late diagnosed cancer, and for men with cancer that reoccurs after treatment. Support is essential for cancer sufferers and their families.
